The Artists:
Ed Voelkel
sculptorEd won his first art contest at age 7 and later completed the Famous Artists School course. In 1972 he graduated high school and became an Eagle Scout with a bronze palm. During high school, he found he had a passion for sculpture, pottery, and throwing the shot put and discus. Ed attended CSU Fullerton and became a graduate in 1978. Ed trained and signed with the National Football League as a tight end for the Los Angeles Rams. However, a football injury to the wrist ended both his NFL and shot putting career. Ed decided to start anew, and acted in Hollywood for 14 years doing movies and commercials. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry 11 Bravo, and while stationed in Germany, he bought a Mercedes Benz and toured Europe, where he saw many famous artworks. These creations by the classical grandmasters inspired him to continue his own artistic journey. He returned to the U.S. and started Voelkel Designs Studio in 1983, with a passion for doing the hardest sculpture of all - portraits. He moved to Wine Country (Healdsburg, CA) with his family and developed the Wine Series and Wine Pioneers in bronze, which is now expanding to other wine growing regions in the nation and abroad.
Gavin Voelkel
sculptor, lead-designerLike his father, Gavin also became an Eagle Scout with a bronze palm and has developed a great interest and passion for art. He first began with the study of pottery and drawing in high school; however, he yearned for a greater understanding of traditional work and practices. When he graduated from high school in 2009, he moved to Europe and lived there for a year studying and touring cities throughout Germany and France. After seeing the powerful imagery in the paintings and sculptures of the grandmasters, he felt inspired to create forms of sculpture that works to integrate the classical styles into a new contemporary manner. Upon his return from Europe, he enrolled in Southwestern College for fine arts where he is a Phi Theta Kappa scholar, and is in the top 3% of the school for academic achievements. He is now the co-owner of Voelkel Designs Studio, where he is a sculptor and designer. His main emphasis and style of art is figurative classical sculpture and portraiture.
